Intro

It may seem counterintuitive to purify your drinking water with a stick of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing it for centuries.

Our binchotan is cut to a fixed length, so it slots perfectly into most water bottles, carafes and jugs out there.

 

How to Use

The charcoal stick is ready to use. Simply fill your bottle / carafe / jug with drinking (potable) tap water and wait for the charcoal to filter impurities from the water. Leaving your charcoal in water overnight is ideal, but you will taste the difference after just one hour. Then, enjoy great tasting water!

IMPORTANT NOTES

- It must only be used with drinking safe tap water.

- Occasionally you will notice tiny particles / fragments of the charcoal in the water, but do not be alarmed as it will do you no harm if you swallow them (active charcoal tablets are prescribed to treat diarrhoea, digestion and flatulence).

- Your binchotan charcoal is already washed and ready to use.

- Please do not wash with detergent or soap.

- Please do not use with flavoured cordials or juices.

- Please remove the binchotan from the bottle you are using it with these before washing it.

- Boiling the binchotan for 10 minutes in water will release the impurities it has been holding.

The origins are not completely clear, but it is believed that a form of Binchotan charcoal (sometimes referred to as 'white charcoal') was introduced to Japan by a Japanese monk and scholar called Kukai 1,200 years ago. It was during the Edo Period (17th century) that a man called Binchuya Chozaemon made it popular.

Sustainably sourced wood is placed in a kiln and charred at a relatively low temperature for some time, then, near the end of the process, the kiln temperature is raised to about 1,000 degree Celsius to make the wood red-hot. The charcoal is then removed and quickly covered with a special powder made from earth, sand and ash, and this gives the charcoal surface a whitish hue (explaining the name 'white charcoal'). The rapid rise in temperature, followed by a rapid cooling, incinerates the bark and leaves a smooth, hard surface. If you strike it, you'll hear a clear, metallic sound.

Binchotan charcoal has an incredibly porous surface with tiny cavities oriented in many directions. Just 1 gram has a surface area in excess of 500 m2 (about one tenth the size of a football field). It is also known as active carbon as the ions of contaminants are attracted to the surface of the carbon, where they will be held. It is also able to release minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium back into the water which enhances its taste and health benefits.

If you are using your Binchotan with your reusable water bottle and fill it up once a day, then it should last three months. You are then able to recharge it by boiling it in water for ten minutes and then leaving to dry in sunlight. You should be able to keep recharging it for a further three months.

DIRECTIONS

Before first use, you may want to soften the wrap gently with a hairdryer or follow the pasteurisation instructions below.

Clean with lukewarm water and soap and hang to dry. Reuse.

You can refresh and repasteurise your wrap every few months by placing on a baking paper in the over for a few minutes at 70-100 degrees.

Do not use with hot food, raw meat or in the microwave.

With good care your wrap should last approx. a year.

You can then place it in the compost or cut into strips as a fire starter.

to give you an idea, many recycling centers and public recycling programs don't accept aluminum foil, leaving many scratching their heads as to why.

if you can recycle an aluminum can you should be able to recycle foil as well, right?

well, the fact is, aluminum foil is 100% recyclable though the catch is that it is often much dirtier than cans.

with the sheets of foil often being filled with food waste that can lead to contamination, many recycling center simply won't accept it.

What is a metal razor?
Before the plastic razors we know today, people used a safety razor. Until the 17th century, straight razors were used so people had to be shaved by experienced barbers. Then the safety razor came along, and it got much easier for people to do their own shaving. It really started to gain mass popularity in the 20th century, when it became possible to change its double-edged blade.

Composition
100% brass! Brass is corrosion-proof. Solid and resistant, it is perfect to create long-lasting metal razors. Brass ensures a perfectly weighted balance that will help you achieve a close and smooth shave. It is important to note that brass does not contain nickel initially. Still, there could be traces of it, so watch out and do the test if you are allergic to nickel.

One Blade
Single-use plastic products' introduction into the market led to them invading our homes and, especially, our bathrooms. The competition sparked between the leading razor manufacturers, who started differentiating their products by adding more and more blades. However, more blades does not necessarily mean a better shave. Skin irritations and cuts are caused by the blades passing over the skin, which worsens with the number of blades. Therefore, single-blade razors are less harmful to the skin and reduce the risk of pain after shaving. Moreover, replacement razor heads with multiple blades are often much more expensive than double-edged blades. As a result, people tend to use them too long, even when they are dull. This is a bad habit because dull blades are prone to irritate the skin and create ingrown hairs and shaving bumps. Since single blades are much cheaper, they help you take care of your skin because you can change them as soon as they start to wear out.

Impact
Single-use plastic has invaded our bathroom! Over time, we have become used to the fact that most of our bathroom products contain plastic. However, this material is rarely fully recyclable. For example, if a shampoo bottle is not disposed of properly, it can take up to 500 years to decompose. The environmental impact is even worse with products like disposable razors. They cannot be recycled, as the metal is embedded in plastic. So, all this plastic is burned or ends up in nature. There is cause for concern when you consider that a person who shaves almost every day with plastic razors will use about 2,400 razors in their lifetime!
