Paper receipts look harmless, right?
Well, the thing is... paper receipts printed on shiny, thermal paper, are not recyclable because they are coated with the infamous substance called bisphenol A (BPA). As you’ll know by now, these chemicals can be harmful if they are released into the environment or ingested in large quantities...
Recycling BPA-coated receipts may contaminate the recycling bin... Composting them is even worse, because this could release BPA to surface waters! All of this would increase human exposure to BPA - a no-no!
So, what can you do? Well, many stores (including ours!) will send you an email receipt, or give you the choice of whether to take a printed receipt... to which you can always say “thanks, but no thanks!”
